hybrid integration of organic materials with silicon waveguides

Silicon waveguides and resonators are great for confining light into tiny areas.  But when you want photons to interact with one another, just confining them isn't usually enough:  You also need to increase the nonlinearity, by bringing in highly nonlinear materials.  As part of Dr. Hochberg's  graduate thesis, he demonstrated the first silicon-organic hybrid photonic devices, for electrooptic modulation, detection, and all-optical modulation.
